Food in the Fort

For our September 11th day of service, we had a handful of volunteers come out to help build raised beds for Food in the Fort and plant trees in our orchard. Though it was a rainy and gloomy day, with the help of these volunteers and several AmeriCorps members, we were able to get started on these two projects.

If you haven’t heard about Food in the Fort, let me give you a little bit of information about what they do. Food in the Fort operates out of the Redeemer Church of Knoxville. On the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, Food in the Fort distributes groceries to families in need. They partner with Panera Bread and Second Harvest and have many volunteers that help them.

We have partnered with Food in the Fort by building them two raised beds on part of our land. This will provide an opportunity for families to not only have access to fresh vegetables and herbs, but will also give them the chance to learn how to grow their own food and be a part of that process. We are very excited about this partnership. Until we can get some produce growing, we will be donating what we can to their cause.
