It’s Finger-Licking Sweetness…

Today, I walked into a barn swarming with bees only to see lots of people wearing funny little hats. This was only part of the honey harvesting experience. Not only do you get cozy with bees and wear funny hats, but you get to lick the honey off your fingers through the whole process! Who wouldn’t want to do that?

Since this was the first time that I had ever been a part of harvesting honey, I had a lot to learn. Ben told me that we only needed to harvest six boxes and that we’d leave the rest for our bees to have food for the winter. He also explained to me that the bees cap off the honey with wax, creating a seal so the honey can be stored. In order to extract that honey, the cap must be removed. Once the frames have been uncapped, they are placed into a hand-powered centrifuge. This spins the honey out of the frame.

Today, we extracted honey from 60 frames. It was a sticky, sweet and fun experience! Next year, you should come out and help us harvest our honey.

Let us know if you would like to buy some honey. We are also selling tea with the honey. We have two types:

-Big Love Lemon Mint: This contains Lemon Balm, Peppermint and Passionflower. It is a soothing mix that might help with stress, stomachaches and healing.

-Catalyst Calmer: This contains Chamomile and Calendula. It is a calming, anti-inflammatory and cure-all mix.

“Life is a mosaic of pleasure and pain-grief is an interval between two moments of joy. Peace is the interlude between two wars. You have no rose without a thorn; the diligent picker will avoid the pricks and gather the flower. There is no bee without the sting;cleverness consists in gather the honey nevertheless.”
